ICACH has been pursuing a project focusing on the application of RTI photography on works dating from the early years of Cretan artist Domenikos Theotokopoulos (1541-1614), known as El Greco during his illustrious career in Spain. This opportunity is possible through collaborations with museums and institutions owning the works: the Benaki Museum in Athens, The Historical Museum of Crete, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs/ Syros Bishopric, the Agnes Etherington Art Center in Ontario, Canada.

Thus far, ICACH has documented the following works: “Dormition of the Virgin”(1560-1565), St. Luke painting the Virgin (1560-1567), “Adoration of the Magi” (1565-67), “Baptism of Christ” (ca.1567), “The Nativity of Christ” (ca.1567), “View of Mt. Sinai and the Monastery of St. Catherine” (1570). The project’s preliminary outcomes have offered new insights, detailed evidence and valuable observations on El Greco’s work, technique and style during a transformative period for the Cretan artist. Results were presented in the International Conference on “El Greco’s Cretan years” organized in Heraklion (June 21-23, 2014) and will be featured in the related publication. The final projected product of this effort is the creation of a digital repository of images of the early works of El Greco featuring the RTI results viewed in the context of new research on the early development of the renown artist.
